Apple Pay lets customers using the Safari browser on iPhone, iPad, and Mac check out in your online store with one tap. It makes the purchasing process easier for customers encouraging more customers to complete the purchase.

When using Apple Pay, customers don’t have to manually enter their credit card details or shipping info as this is already securely stored on their device. All they need to complete a purchase is to choose Apple Pay at checkout and identify themselves with Touch ID or Face ID. Orders paid with Apple Pay will display Apple Pay in the order details.

Store requirements

To offer Apple Pay in your store, make sure you meet the following requirements:

  • Your site runs on a secure HTTPS connection.

  • You specified your store URL in the Store location field (your store admin → Settings → General → Store Profile).

Setting up Apple Pay

Payments on Apple Pay are processed through a Stripe payment provider. Further instructions on setting up Apple Pay vary depending on whether you use the Instant site or you added your store to WordPress or any other website.

Note: Setting up Apple Pay also automatically enables Google Pay for customers using the Chrome browser on Android mobile devices.

To set up Apple Pay in your Instant site:

  1. From your store admin, go to the Payment page.

  2. Scroll down to Stripe. Depending on whether you have a Stripe payment option set up or not, follow the steps below.

  3. (Stripe is set up) If you have already set up Stripe as a payment option in your store, click Set Up Apple Pay. Apple Pay will be enabled automatically.

  4. (Stripe is not set up) If you haven’t set up Stripe, click Connect with Stripe. Then follow the instructions on the Stripe site to connect your Stripe account and complete the setup.

  5. When you have a Stripe account, click Set Up Apple Pay to verify your website domain with Apple.

  6. Follow instructions in a short wizard and upload a verification file to your website.

  7. Click Verify Uploaded File.

Note: Uploading a verification file requires access to the website’s backend. Apple Pay can’t be enabled without this file. If you use a site builder with no access to the backend and you can’t upload a verification file, Apple pay can’t be enabled in your store. Please contact your site builder support for help on this.

Once you complete the steps, customers will be able to check out with Apple Pay in your store.

Note: Your Stripe payment method must be in live mode, i.e. able to accept payments, for Apple Pay to work.

Here is what you will see in your store admin once Apple Pay is enabled:

TIP: If your store is added to multiple websites and you want to enable Apple Pay on all websites, add each domain in your store admin → Payment → Stripe by clicking the Add domain.

FAQ

Why is the Apple Pay button not showing at checkout?

There may be multiple reasons why you don’t see the Apple Pay button in your store. To fix it, try these troubleshooting steps — make sure:

  • You use the latest design for your online storefront. Go to your store admin → Settings → What’s New and enable storefront updates, if any, to make sure that you use the Next Generation Storefront.

  • Your domain is verified via your store admin. It’s possible that you verified your website domain in the Stripe account manually instead of verifying it via your store admin. In this case, the Apple Pay button may show up in your store for a second and then disappear. Here is how to fix it:

  1. Go to your Stripe account → Settings → Payment Methods → Apple Pay and remove the domain.

  2. Go to your store admin → Payment → Stripe.

  3. Click Edit next to your domain → Remove.

  4. Click the Add domain and follow the wizard to re-add your domain.
